HOW TO USE LEDGER LIVE’S CUSTOM FEES FOR FASTER TRANSACTIONS
You just sent a Bitcoin transaction and it’s stuck. The mempool is clogged, the default fee is too low, and your funds are in limbo. Ledger Live’s custom fee feature is your escape hatch. This guide shows you exactly how to use it—no fluff, no guesswork.
WHY CUSTOM FEES MATTER
Every blockchain transaction competes for block space. Miners pick the highest fees first. If you stick to Ledger Live’s default fees, you’re at the mercy of network congestion. Custom fees let you jump the queue when speed matters. Think of it as express shipping for your crypto.
PREREQUISITES
Before you tweak fees, make sure:
– Your Ledger device is connected and unlocked.
– Ledger Live is updated to the latest version.
– You have a small amount of the native coin (BTC, ETH, etc.) in your account to cover fees.
– You understand the transaction won’t be reversible.
STEP 1: OPEN THE SEND FLOW
Launch Ledger Live. Click “Send” on the left sidebar. Select the account you’re sending from. Enter the recipient’s address and the amount. Double-check the address—mistakes are permanent.
STEP 2: TOGGLE CUSTOM FEES
After entering the amount, Ledger Live shows the default fee. Below it, you’ll see a toggle labeled “Customize fee.” Flip it. The interface expands to reveal fee options.
STEP 3: CHOOSE YOUR FEE MODEL
Ledger Live offers three ways to set custom fees:
SATS/VBYTE (BITCOIN)
This is the most precise method. Sats/vbyte measures how much you’re willing to pay per byte of transaction data. Higher values = faster confirmations. For Bitcoin:
– 1-5 sats/vbyte: Slow (hours or days).
– 10-20 sats/vbyte: Standard (30-60 minutes).
– 30-50 sats/vbyte: Fast (10-30 minutes).
– 100+ sats/vbyte: Instant (under 10 minutes).
Use a mempool explorer like mempool.space to check current rates. If the mempool is empty, even 5 sats/vbyte might confirm quickly. If it’s packed, you’ll need 50+ to compete.
GWEI (ETHEREUM AND ERC-20 TOKENS)
Ethereum uses gas prices in gwei. 1 gwei = 0.000000001 ETH. For Ethereum:
– 10-30 gwei: Slow (hours).
– 50-100 gwei: Standard (5-15 minutes).
– 150-300 gwei: Fast (under 5 minutes).
– 500+ gwei: Instant (1-2 minutes).
Check ethgasstation.info or Etherscan’s gas tracker for real-time rates. ERC-20 tokens use the same gas system, so the same rules apply.
FLAT FEE (OTHER COINS)
Some coins (like Litecoin or Dogecoin) let you set a flat fee. Ledger Live shows the default fee in the coin’s native unit. You can increase it by a percentage or set a fixed amount. For example:
– Litecoin: Default is 0.001 LTC. Bump to 0.002 LTC for faster confirmations.
– Dogecoin: Default is 1 DOGE. Increase to 5 DOGE if the network is busy.
STEP 4: ESTIMATE CONFIRMATION TIME
Ledger Live doesn’t show estimated confirmation times for custom fees. You’ll need to cross-reference your chosen fee with a mempool explorer. For Bitcoin, plug your sats/vbyte into mempool.space. For Ethereum, check Etherscan’s gas tracker. This step prevents overpaying or underpaying.
STEP 5: SIGN AND SEND
After setting your fee, click “Continue.” Ledger Live prompts you to confirm on your device. Verify the fee amount on your Ledger’s screen—this is your last chance to catch mistakes. Press both buttons to sign. The transaction broadcasts to the network.
STEP 6: MONITOR THE TRANSACTION
After sending, Ledger Live shows the transaction in the “Operations” tab. Click it to see the status. If it’s stuck, you can:
– Wait: Fees might drop, and miners will eventually pick it up.
– Replace-by-fee (RBF): For Bitcoin, some wallets let you bump the fee later. Ledger Live doesn’t support RBF yet, so this isn’t an option.
– Speed up: For Ethereum, you can use a service like MetaMask’s “Speed Up” feature if you imported your Ledger account.
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
OVERPAYING FOR NO REASON
Custom fees are powerful, but don’t throw money away. If the mempool is empty, 5 sats/vbyte might confirm in 10 minutes. Paying 100 sats/vbyte is wasteful. Always check the mempool first.
IGNORING TRANSACTION SIZE
Not all transactions are equal. A simple Bitcoin send (1 input, 2 outputs) is small. A transaction with 10 inputs is larger and costs more. Ledger Live shows the estimated size in bytes. Larger transactions need higher fees to confirm quickly.
FORGETTING ABOUT CHANGE ADDRESSES
Bitcoin transactions often create change outputs. These add to the transaction size and fee cost. If you’re sending most of your balance, the change output might be tiny. In this case, you can skip the change address to save on fees. Ledger Live does this automatically if you send the “Max” amount.
USING CUSTOM FEES FOR SMALL AMOUNTS
If you’re sending $10 worth of crypto, paying a $5 fee doesn’t make sense. Custom fees are best for time-sensitive or large transactions. For small amounts, stick to the default or wait for lower fees.
NOT DOUBLE-CHECKING THE FEE ON YOUR LEDGER DEVICE
Ledger Live shows the fee on your computer screen, but always verify it on your ledger live device. This prevents malware from tricking you into overpaying. If the fee looks wrong on your device, cancel the transaction.
ADVANCED TIPS FOR POWER USERS
BATCHING TRANSACTIONS
If you’re sending to multiple addresses, batch them into one transaction. This reduces the total fee cost. Ledger Live doesn’t support batching natively, but you can use a tool like Electrum (with your Ledger) to create batched transactions.
USING CHILD-PAYS-FOR-PARENT (CPFP)
If a transaction is stuck, you can create a new transaction that spends the unconfirmed output with a high fee. Miners will confirm the stuck transaction to get the high-fee one. Ledger Live doesn’t support CPFP directly, but you can do it with Electrum.
OPTIMIZING ETHEREUM GAS LIMITS
Ethereum transactions have a gas limit (the maximum gas you’re willing to use). Ledger Live sets this automatically, but you can tweak it. For simple sends, 21,000 gas is enough. For smart contracts, you might need more. Check Etherscan’s gas tracker for typical limits.
USING LAYER 2 SOLUTIONS
If fees are consistently high, consider Layer 2 solutions like the Lightning Network (Bitcoin) or Polygon (Ethereum). These offer near-instant transactions for pennies. Ledger Live supports Lightning via third-party apps like Phoenix.
WHEN TO STICK WITH DEFAULT FEES
Custom fees aren’t always necessary. Use them when:
– The network is congested.
– You need the transaction confirmed
